Barkston, home of The Plastic People, celebrates its 50th successful year of trading thanks to all customers and staff.
Our heritage dates back to August 1969 where our business started from premises in Low Road, Hunslet. Within 4 years the business had grown quickly and relocated to purpose built premises at Domestic Street Industrial Estate, Holbeck.
With increasing requirements for value added services to the sheet plastic sales, our plastic fabrication division was born. A small plastic engineering business was acquired to help meet rising demands for fabrication and machining and, from this, Barkston Engineering Ltd grew and was officially founded in 1973. Focus was placed on developing people knowledge and expertise. Our plastic fabricators were the first to become CSWIP qualified and the business became the first plastics engineering company to conform to BS5750 for quality management and assurance which we still hold today, updated to ISO9001.
The business moved to more suitable premises in Cross Green, Leeds in 1995 and expanded again in 2001 by acquiring a site in Newcastle.
Moving with the times
In keeping with social change, investment was made to develop the digital arm of the business. The company’s initial online presence is celebrated this year with the launch of our new website. Alongside a commitment to ISO 9001: 2015 quality standard, this direction assists the driving force at the heart of the business – to deliver better customer satisfaction and continual improvement through our growing plastic team. Online communication channels and use of social media support this delivery, providing easy and flexible access with our plastic experts.
Our plastic experts became affectionately known as ‘the plastic people’. We appreciated that nod to our friendly professionalism and thought it fitting to make it more official. Though we will always be here at Barkston, we consider our business as The Home of The Plastic People.
We take a lot of pride in our company, our products, services and team and our intent to be one of the most trusted plastic brands, but ultimately, we exist to serve our customers. Barkston Ltd lives and works by values nurtured throughout the business. It’s the only way to approach business as a manufacturer whose name is synonymous with quality and integrity for customers globally. We think it’s stood us in good stead as we celebrate 50 years of trading and look forward to the next 50 too.
